Off-site construction growth is rising quickly. A Frost & Sullivan report says the prefabricated building market will exceed $215 billion by 2025.
Modular construction can drive demand for more manufacturing facilities. Mark Skender, CEO of Skender, said that if modular goes mainstream, more facilities will be needed to meet demand. Billions of dollars are being invested in factories for modular construction.
Because most of the process happens indoors, off-site modular construction can save time. Some estimate time savings of 25% to 50%. The process is more streamlined from start to finish, and build time is reduced because elements are delivered to the site instead of built there.
Off-site construction can reduce human error, including on welding joints. It can also reduce time lost from changing workers on the job. The result is higher quality work. Prefabrication is described as producing excellent quality.
Safety is easier to manage in off-site construction. Konchar said safety is perhaps the most important benefit of off-site manufacturing. Workers are in a safer environment with less risk of injury, and jobsite safety can improve because fewer trades work on-site.
Buildoffsite reports that defects can be reduced by 50% with modular construction. Materials are delivered and stored in bulk, which can reduce waste and deterioration that can happen on-site.
