International Flashing Awareness Day Begins Here

What the day is about

International Flashing Awareness Day was created to educate people about better building practices. The focus is on flashing details, flashing failures, and how to properly use and install flashings on buildings.

How it started

In early 2021, Gena Hoyt and Aron Jones wanted a social media event to show the good, bad, and ugly of flashings. They initially called it National Flashing Awareness Day. Mike Guertin renamed it International Flashing Awareness Day. They also call it Flash Me Day.

Year-by-year growth

• 2021: 30 shirts were sent to friends. Posts were shared on Instagram on August 26.
• 2022: 75 shirts were sent out with help from SIGA North America and Knightingale Design.
• 2023: 150 shirts were printed and sent across Canada and the US.

Activities and plans

The team recorded a podcast episode with community voice clips about flashing fails and favorite details. They also plan to create a YouTube channel to upload Instagram videos and a flashing website as a resource for proper flashing use.
