Revolutionizing the Electrical Panel: How Leviton is Bringing Smart Power to the Modern Home

In an industry where little has changed in over five decades, Leviton has stepped in with a bold new approach to one of the most overlooked, yet essential, parts of the home: the electrical panel.

“The Leviton Load Center, which debuted in 2018, was a significant advancement in electrical technology,” said Kent Anderson of Wesco during their walkthrough at the state-of-the-art Leviton facility. “We started by asking builders and contractors what they didn’t like about the old-school gray boxes—and we listened,” said Rick Gavenda.

Instead of the industrial gray panels that have defined residential electrical boxes for decades (a design holdover from post-WWII surplus paint), Leviton introduced a sleek white, solar-ready panel that’s functional, efficient, and homeowner-friendly. With options for 20, 30, 42, and even 66 circuits, the load center is built for modern scalability.

A New Standard for Builders and Homeowners Alike

From the modular builder's perspective, this product is a dream. “Everything gets installed within the studs, and all circuit wiring is landed on thermal steps—no wires go to the breakers,” Rick explained. “That saves time, simplifies installation, and keeps things incredibly organized.”

For production builders, the value is even more compelling. “Today, if a homeowner wants to add solar, they typically need to replace their panel. With ours, that’s not necessary—ours is solar-ready from the start, with no added cost compared to most panels currently being used.”

Smart, Safe, and Fully Connected

What truly sets the Leviton Load Center apart is its intelligence. “We have three types of breakers: traditional, protective, and smart,” Rick said. “The smart ones do more than just trip—they think. If a breaker trips and hasn’t resolved the fault, it won’t let you reset it. That prevents false security and truly protects the homeowner.”

This safety-first design stems from innovations Leviton introduced years ago in their GFCI receptacles. The same self-testing logic is now embedded in their electronic breakers—making the panel smarter and safer at once.

And with the My Leviton app, homeowners can take complete control. “We’ve created a whole-home energy monitoring system,” Rick explained. “Through a Bluetooth-connected hub and Wi-Fi integration, users can track total power consumption, see how much energy is coming from solar panels, and even monitor generators.”

Seamless Integration for Smart Living

The smart features don’t end with monitoring. Through the My Leviton app, users can schedule loads—like pool pumps, heat tape, or EV chargers—and even remotely shut off or reset breakers without lifting a screwdriver.

“Imagine a homeowner living in the mountains with snow buildup—they can turn on roof heat tape from their phone,” Rick explained. “Or realize they’ve had a circuit running all year and adjust it instantly. It’s not just convenience; it’s real cost savings.”

Even better, the app allows service professionals to guide homeowners remotely. “If there’s ever an issue, an electrician can ask, ‘What do the indicator lights on your panel look like?’ That’s a level of visibility we’ve never had before,”  Rick added.

From Regulation to Innovation

Historically, the evolution of electrical panels has been reactive—pushed forward only by changes in code. But Leviton is flipping the script, creating a proactive, intuitive, and consumer-centered solution.

“It’s no longer just about compliance,” said Rick. “We’re designing for real people, real lifestyles, and real control.”

Powering the Future of Modular Construction

As modular construction grows, integrated smart power solutions like Leviton’s Load Center are more important than ever. “This is an amazing product,” Kent agreed. “We’re proud to bring it to modular builders and help them deliver smarter, safer homes to their customers.”
