How One Social Architect Is Redefining Community Through Neuro-Inclusive Housing
By: Audree M Grubesic on behalf of Matt McMullen
In construction, we often measure success by square footage, budgets, schedules, and project completion dates. But every so often, a project comes along that reminds us why we build in the first place.
For social architect and developer, J. Matthew McMullen, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP, architecture has always been about more than buildings. It is about creating places where people can thrive.
His philosophy is simple: "Creating Beauty for Work, Play and Life."
That vision is now taking shape through Victory Village – A Trailhead Community, an innovative neuro-inclusive co-housing development in Colorado designed for adults with developmental disabilities to live independently alongside neurotypical neighbors in a connected, supportive community.
More Than Housing
The CoHousing Association of the United States describes Victory Village as "more than co-housing.” It's an intentional community where diversity is embraced, relationships are encouraged, and every resident has the opportunity to live with dignity, purpose, and independence.
Rather than separating individuals based on their abilities, Victory Village creates an environment where everyone belongs. This isn't simply another residential development. It's a different way of thinking about community.
Designing for Human Connection
As the managing member of Trailhead Development LLC and a board member of Trailhead Community, McMullen has become a passionate advocate for creating environments that foster connection instead of isolation.
For the offsite construction industry, projects like Victory Village represent something much larger than innovative housing. They demonstrate how thoughtful planning, intentional design, and modern construction methods can help solve some of society's most meaningful challenges.
As modular and offsite construction continue to evolve, communities like this highlight an opportunity to build housing that is not only faster and more efficient—but also more inclusive and more responsive to the people who call it home.
Building the Next Community
Following the success of Trailhead Community's first location in Littleton, Colorado, plans are now underway for a second neuro-inclusive residential community in Boulder. To help bring that vision to life, supporters are invited to an evening of music and community.
On Thursday, August 27 at 7:00 PM, Moors & McCumber will perform at Pine Street Church in Boulder, 1237 Pine Street, with proceeds benefiting the development of Victory Village. The concert is the second of two performances surrounding Boulder’s popular Band on the Bricks music series.
The event offers more than entertainment—it offers an opportunity for the community to invest in a future where housing is designed for everyone.
A Question Worth Asking
Matt McMullen often ends his invitation with one powerful question: "What Would Love Do Now?" Perhaps that's also an important question for our industry.
As architects, developers, manufacturers, builders, and innovators continue pushing construction forward, perhaps the next generation of projects won't simply be measured by how efficiently they're built—but by how deeply they improve the lives of the people they serve.
At Offsite Dirt Network, we believe innovation is ultimately about people. Victory Village is a powerful reminder that when thoughtful design, compassionate leadership, and purposeful construction come together, we don't just build homes—we build stronger communities.
