Seamless HVAC Integration: How The Unico System Enhances Modular HomeDesign

Unico Modular Home Case Study

The team at Module, a manufacturer and builder of modular homes specifically

designed for urban infill developments, had a problem. They needed an HVAC system

that was as energy efficient as their homes, could easily be incorporated into their

designs at the factory, and just as easily connected and commissioned onsite.

They found the solution to their dilemma-The Unico System, small duct high velocity

(SDHV) HVAC system.

Module Home Design

The manufacturer chose The Unico System to be part of the three homes installed in

the Black Street Development, a model program envisioned to demonstrate the

feasibility of providing well-built, energy-efficient, and affordable single-family homes in

the Garfield Neighborhood of their hometown, Pittsburgh, PA.

Module’s engineers worked with Unico’s modular design team to develop a streamlined

process for integrating key system components – modular air handling units; low-profile

rectangular plenum (main ducting); flexible supply tubing (room delivery ducting); and

unobtrusive bespoke outlets – when the homes were manufactured at their factory.

Unico also provided help and guidance to connect all system elements, install and pipe

the outdoor units, and commission all systems onsite.

Because The Unico System’s components take up far less physical space than

traditional HVAC systems, it can be easily incorporated into panels and modules when

they are crafted at the factory. Once transported to the site, the final connections and

system startup are a snap.

By all measures, the Black Street Development has been a resounding success.

Module maintains one of the homes as a show house, and the remaining two units sold

quickly, offering two Pittsburgh families the opportunity to leave in affordable, energy-

efficient, highly comfortable, and aesthetically beautiful homes.
