The Unico Systems
Featuring: Justin Johnson, Test Engineer & Lab Manager at UNICO
When it comes to HVAC systems, performance and precision aren’t just goals—they’re requirements. At Unico, we take that responsibility seriously. Our state-of-the-art test lab is where science meets regulation, innovation, and real-world application. In this case study, we highlight the critical work happening behind the scenes to ensure every system we produce meets the highest standards.
Why a Test Lab for HVAC?
Unico’s in-house test lab exists for one reason: compliance, performance, and trust. Every HVAC system we manufacture must meet strict federal regulations set by the Department of Energy (DOE) and industry standards like AHRI and ASHRAE. Justin Johnson, our Test Engineer and Lab Manager, leads this effort.
“We simulate real-world indoor and outdoor conditions—up to 175°F and down to -40°F,” Justin explains. “It’s all part of earning accurate SEER, EER, and HSPF ratings.”
This allows Unico Systems to ensure every unit is capable of handling extreme temperature ranges while remaining energy efficient and reliable.
What’s Changing in 2025?
The HVAC industry is evolving rapidly, and new refrigerants like R-454B and R-32 are leading the charge. These refrigerants are more environmentally friendly but also slightly flammable, requiring enhanced safety protocols and equipment redesigns.
“We’re integrating new safety features into both our test chambers and our product line to stay compliant and keep consumers safe.”

The Power of Data & Automation
Testing isn’t just about monitoring temperatures—it’s a data-driven process. Justin and his team use advanced platforms like Yokogawa and LabVIEW to gather and analyze real-time performance metrics.
“I analyze the data in real time. If something is off, I send in a technician to troubleshoot right away.”
And there’s more innovation on the horizon: full lab automation.
“By the end of the year, we’ll be able to run tests at the press of a button,” says Justin Johnson. “That means more tests, longer durations, and less manual
intervention—without compromising precision.”
Automation will also help Unico Systems expand operations beyond a single shift, increasing efficiency and capacity without sacrificing oversight or safety.
Behind the Scenes, For Your Peace of Mind
Every piece of equipment tested at Unico is verified not only internally, but also by third-party labs like Intertek and UL. That means our customers can trust that every unit has been rigorously tested and meets nationally recognized safety and performance standards.
“Everything we test gets certified. We want customers to know they’re buying a system that’s been proven—backed by real data and third-party validation.”
Unico’s test lab isn’t just a room full of machines—it’s the heartbeat of our commitment to quality, innovation, and responsibility. With advanced testing protocols, data analytics, and full automation on the way, we're setting the standard for what HVAC testing should be in 2025 and beyond.
